Someone should know when you don't come back.
Set a timer before you walk home or show a house. Check in and nothing happens, ever. Don't, and the people you picked get your last location, the route you took, and a script telling them exactly what to do.
Belayr depends on your phone, your signal and your contacts, and cannot guarantee a message arrives or arrives in time. It is not connected to 911 and is not a substitute for calling them. Don't make it your only plan.
Free. No card, and your contacts will never install anything.
Three steps, and the third one is the whole product
Arm it
Pick how long you'll be. One tap, before you set off.
Check in
You got there. Type your safe word and it's over. Nobody is contacted, and nothing is kept for long.
Or you don't
Your contacts get one text with a link: where you were, how you got there, your battery, and what to do next.
The timer lives on our servers, not on your phone. If your phone dies, is taken, or loses signal, the clock keeps running anyway. That is the entire point.
When people set one
Walking home at night
The most common timer. A short walk, but nobody knows you left.
A first date
Meeting someone from an app. One friend knows where and when to worry.
Hiking alone
No signal for stretches. The timer runs on our servers, not your phone.
Showing a house
A stranger, an empty house, and an hour alone with them.
Late shift to the car
Nurses, bartenders, retail closers. The parking lot at midnight.
Campus after dark
Back from the library, a party, or a late class.
Traveling solo
Hotel to venue in a city you don't know.
Running alone
Early morning or late evening. Headphones in, trail empty.
Walking the dog after dark
Routine enough that you stop thinking about it.
Rideshare home
Share the trip with someone who will act if it goes wrong.
What it looks like on your phone
The whole product is six screens. Your contacts never see any of them: they get a text.
A word that means "I'm free to talk"
When your contact calls, they ask for your word. Say it and they stand down. Say anything else, confidently, and they treat it as trouble without letting on to whoever is listening.
Belayr never shows it back to you, so it isn't sitting on your phone for someone holding that phone to find. Forget it and you replace it, and everyone is told that it changed.
If they say anything else, don't answer, or sound rehearsed, call 911 and give them the location below.
A normal evening leaves nothing behind
You checked in
Your route is deleted after seven days. Nothing happened, so there is nothing to keep, and nothing for anyone to ask us for later.
You didn't
That route is kept far longer, because it may be the only record of where you went. Deleting it on a privacy timer would be the wrong call.
What Belayr doesn't do
We tell the people you chose. They decide what happens next, with your location in front of them.
What you get is a last known point and a direction of travel. In the first hour, that is what searchers actually want.
We won't let you arm until someone has confirmed they'll be told. A timer nobody receives protects nobody.
Why trust Belayr with where you are
Belayr is privately held and funded by the people who build it. Nobody else has a say in what it does with your data.
Belayr runs on Microsoft Azure in the US. Your location is never sent abroad, and never sold to anyone.
Belayr depends on your phone and your signal. We say so on the first screen, because a safety product that overpromises is worse than none.
Walking home does not cost anything. No trial, no card, no upgrade nag. The business model is real estate brokerages, not you.
Be first to set one

Belayr is free for walking home and always will be. If that matters to you, a donation keeps the lights on. It goes straight to Belayr, no middleman.
